Peugeot won the 1,000 kilometers of Spa-Francorchamps--a open of the European Le Mans Series--on Sunday, putting on a dominating array to take the top two podium places and beating down consummate-rival Audi.
Simon Pagenaud, Sebastien Bourdais and Pedro Lamy took the comprehensive win in their 908 HDi FAP, but the race at Belgium’s fixed and undulating Grand Prix venue was a silly affair. The French producer’s winning car bounced back from a rotating on lap one, then endured a bizarre red-degenerate period and rain that flatten late in the race.
Officials were self-conscious to halt the race without delay after the two-hour point because of power default at the track, which disabled radios and the timing and scoring system. At that import, Audi’s Allan McNish had more than a 50-alternate lead thanks to a well-timed pit pause just before a safety car time, which gave him an advantage over the Peugeots.
The speed restarted when the power returned almost 40 minutes later, and former Champ Car and Modus operandi One driver Bourdais hunted down McNish’s co-driver, Rinaldo Capello and involved him in a half-four fight. They traded the margin in the La Source hairpin at one stress, only for Audi’s R15 TDI Benefit to repass Bourdais on the run down the front straightforward toward Eau Rouge. The Peugeot ultimately staked its demand on the lead when Capello wanton time when each car pitted.
